We provide you with information on events and courses organized by the GAUSS Career Service (and other providers on Göttingen Campus), funding calls, and job opportunities. If you require a 1-2-1 career counselling session or CV/Application check please book your appointment via email.

We also feature in this newsletter some information on the Postdoc Appreciation Week, which will take place 19-23 September with events across Germany for Postdocs.

On the GAUSS Webpage you will find COVID-19 relevant information and measures taken by GAUSS and GGNB. Furthermore you will find a guide to "Corona-test positive? What happens next" by the university.

We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service online workshop “How to plan and write a competitive research proposal” by Dr. Thomas Koch. This workshop is intended for postdoctoral researchers and late-stage PhD students who are new to the process of applying for a scientific research grant. DFG Research Career Series "Prospect" - online talks on different funding schemes (schedule until 12/2023 now online))

The DFG is offering a variety of funding opportunities for all career stages between doctorate and professorship. Daimler Benz Postdoctoral Scholarships for 2 yrs (Deadline: 1 Oct 2022)

Every year, the Daimler and Benz Foundation awards twelve scholarships to exceptional postdoctoral students, assistant professors, and young managers of new research projects. Their goal is to support the autonomy and creativity of the next generation of academics and to help committed researchers as they begin their postdoctoral academic careers. The recipients receive scholarships of €40,000 for two years to finance research assistants, technical equipment, research trips and attendance at conferences. ERC Starting Grant 2023 (apply by 25 Oct 2022)

ERC Starting Grants (up to 5 years and € 1.5 million) are designed to support talented early-career scientist who have already produced excellent supervised work, are ready to work independently and show potential to be a research leader.

Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD (Extensions are possible under certain circumstances — see the latest ERC Work Programme), a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal. Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (known as a Host Institution/HI). It could be the HI where the applicant already works, or any other HI located in one of the EU Member States or Associated Countries. Read more...

Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz Prize (DFG; prize money: 200k€) - be nominated by 26 Oct 2022

The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize, named after the physicist and former president of the DFG, is an accolade for early career researchers and provides further incentive for excellent achievements in their research work. The prize has been awarded since 1977 and is open to all research fields. Besides honouring excellent research achievements the prize is intended to assist in furthering scientific careers. There are ten prizes of € 200,000 each whereas the prize money can be spent for research purposes only up to three years. The deadline to be nominated is 22 Oct 2022. Volkswagen Foundation "Pioneer Projects" (upcoming deadlines: 31 Oct 2022 and 31 March 2023)

The Volkswagen Foundation wants to offer experimental spaces for fundamental innovations and significant improvements in all areas of the (German) research system. To this end, the Foundation will fund promising ideas for pioneer projects from the academic community. Available are 500,000€ for max. 3 years per project. Research on Science - Summer schools and workshops (Volkswagen Foundation, apply by 1 Nov 2022)

Within the framework of "Research on Science", the Volkswagen Foundation offers funding for workshops and summer schools that aim to reflect, combine, and experiment with the various methodological approaches or theoretical challenges in the area of research on research. Respective events are meant to introduce early career researchers from various disciplines to research on research and to enhance the participants’ skills and knowledge in this area. The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowships offer generous funding and personalized support to outstanding scientists and scholars in any academic discipline. Leading Israeli universities, renowned centers of science, scholarship and innovation, provide Azrieli Fellows with a great academic experience. Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2022.  The fellowship – now open to applicants from around the globe – offers funding of approximately EUR 58,000 (ILS 188,000) for 24 postdocs per year. Funding support for women in science with children - apply to the Christiane Nüsslein-Vollhard Foundation (deadline 30 Nov 2022)

The Christiane Nüsslein-Vollhard (CNV) Foundation is aiming for the advancement of science and to facilitate the progress of highly qualified women with children. We especially aim to support excellent graduate students and postdoctoral fellows by providing them with funds to be used for additional childcare and domestic help (1 year, monthly 400 €). The Foundation intends this contribution to enable young mothers to gain greater flexibility and time for their scientific work.
