Welcome to the July issue of our monthly GAUSS Career Service Newsletter. We provide you with information on events and courses organized by the GAUSS Career Service (and other providers on Göttingen Campus), funding calls, and job opportunities.

Our available slots for 1-2-1 career counselling sessions and CV/Application checks in July and mostly August are already fully booked. If you require one and want to secure a slot in late August or September please book your appointment via email.

On the GAUSS Webpage you will find COVID-19 relevant information and measures taken by GAUSS and GGNB. Furthermore you will find a guide to "Corona-test positive? What happens next" by the university.

GAUSS Career Workshop: "Leadership Skills for Scientists" (22-23 Sept 2022)


We are happy to announce our next GAUSS Career Service workshop “Leadership Skills for Scientists” by Dr. Alexander Britz.

Advancing as a scientist, both out- as well as inside academia, comes with increased leadership responsibilities. In this interactive workshop the participants learn the essential leadership skills which are necessary to be successful as a PhD student or Postdoc and to later facilitate a successful transition to a senior position at a research institution or the dream job outside academia.

Young Cancer Scientist Network & Kick-off Symposium with Career Talks (12 Nov 2022)

The CCC-N is inviting to their First Annual Young Cancer Scientist Symposium on 12 November 2022 (9am onwards) at the HS55, UMG, Robert-Koch-Straße 40, 37075 Göttingen. In the third year of the pandemic, an entire generation of young scientists focusing on cancer has had little opportunity to interact with other researchers in person. The meeting is intended to enable them to present their work, exchange ideas, models, and technologies, and establish scientific networks beyond their existing groups and institutions. ERC Starting Grant 2023: call opens on 12 July and will close on 25 Oct 2022

ERC Starting Grants (up to 5 years and € 1.5 million) are designed to support talented early-career scientist who have already produced excellent supervised work, are ready to work independently and show potential to be a research leader.

Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD (Extensions are possible under certain circumstances — see the latest ERC Work Programme), a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal. Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (known as a Host Institution/HI). It could be the HI where the applicant already works, or any other HI located in one of the EU Member States or Associated Countries. Read more...

The DFG is offering a variety of funding opportunities for all career stages between doctorate and professorship. EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship (apply by 12 Aug 2022 to enter the autumn selection round)

EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships support excellent postdoctoral researchers throughout Europe and the world for a period of up to two years. International mobility is a key requirement. The fellowship includes a salary or stipend, a relocation allowance and support for fellows with children. ETH Zürich Postdoctoral Fellowships (apply by 1 Sept 2022)

The ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship programme (ETH Fellows) supports incoming postdoctoral researchers at ETH Zurich and is intended to foster young researchers who have already demonstrated scientific excellence in the early stages of their careers. The fellowship is for two years and you recieve a full-time post as well as substitutues for research expenses. Overall the success is 25% and you need to jointly apply with your potential host. Are you interested in joining the renowned DKFZ? Then take your opportunity and apply for one of their Postdoctoral Fellowships representing the most prestigious and competitive postdoc recruitment process at the DKFZ. Daimler Benz Postdoctoral Scholarships for 2 yrs (Deadline: 1 Oct 2022)

Every year, the Daimler and Benz Foundation awards twelve scholarships to exceptional postdoctoral students, assistant professors, and young managers of new research projects. Their goal is to support the autonomy and creativity of the next generation of academics and to help committed researchers as they begin their postdoctoral academic careers. The recipients receive scholarships of €40,000 for two years to finance research assistants, technical equipment, research trips and attendance at conferences.
