The GAUSS Career Service is happy to announce the next Career Impulse Session titled “A peak behind the curtain – how publishers manage scientific journals” with Dr. Christian Schulz from Elsevier Publishing in Amsterdam.
Most academics are well aware of what the role of an editor involves, but what about the publisher behind the journal? What does a publisher do and what does it take to succeed?
Christian will give answers to these questions, based on his experience working as a Senior Publisher at Elsevier. Time will be given for further questions.

Information about the speaker:
Christian is a Senior Publisher in the Chemistry Journals Division at Elsevier in Amsterdam. Following his studies in Molecular Biotechnology and Molecular Biotechnology at the Dresden University of Technology and Uppsala University, he moved to Göttingen for his PhD thesis on the protein translocation into mitochondria at the University Medical Center and International Max Planck Research School for Molecular Biology. In 2015 he joined Elsevier and has moved on from his initial portfolio of journals focused on Spectroscopy to a new set of journals in Analytical Chemistry and Sensors. In his work he focuses on the management of editorial teams, development of journal strategies, the organization of conferences and interactions with the scientific communities.

Our Career Impulse Sessions offer a platform for interactive and informal exchange about career-related topics for PhD students and Postdocs in the Life and Natural Sciences. By inviting PhD holders with different career paths, we would like to illustrate the broad range of potential careers for PhD students and Postdocs and give inspiration for career choices. The sessions also offer a platform to exchange experiences among each other.
