Precarity of academic careers: call for reforms on international level

The academic system is more and more being criticized concerning the precarity of academic careers. Issues such as excessively short contract terms, publication pressure and the need for mobility are no longer secrets. (Or doesn’t that ring any bell?) In addition, there is often a dependence on third-party funding.

As this is not only characteristic for the German system but turns out to be an international phenomenon the OECD recently published their policy paper “Reducing the Precarity of Academic Research Careers” addressing these aspects making a strong case for reforms and support measures that show scientists ways out of the science system. You can also read a summary (and comment) in the Nature article “Researchers’ career insecurity needs attention and reform now, says international coalition”, published on June 8, 2021.
