Call for participants in the “Three-Minute-Thesis (3MT) Competition, Feb 2022”
Can you present the core message of your doctoral thesis in just three minutes and with only one static slide? Can you explain your research to a group of lay people – in English? And finally, are you interested in a trip to Padova in June 2022? Then this is something for you!
We are delighted to launch the call for the 2022 Edition of the Coimbra Group
Three-Minute-Thesis (CG 3MT) Competition
Haven’t heard about it so far?
Göttingen’s PhD students already participated three times at their own 3MT competition and each time they made it to the finals:
2017 Tanvi Butola (second prize in Edinburgh, GAUSS)
2019 Claudia Schmidt (winner in Krakow, GAUSS)
2020 Selina Bruns (runner-up virtually in Montpellier, GFA)
You can find the finalist videos on the Coimbra Group website: https://www.coimbra-group.eu/coimbra-group-3-minute-thesis-competition/
The final of the 2022 edition will be held at the CG Annual Conference at the University of Padova, 7-10 June 2022. Now it is the turn of the member universities – such as the University of Göttingen – to hold their own competitions and to select their best candidate for the international CG 3MT Competition in Padova.
The rules of the competition are simple, but not easy:
Each participant has only 3 minutes to present his or her research with a single PowerPoint-slide to an educated lay audience in such a way that they can easily follow and understand what the person is working on. The candidates presentation will be filmed.
The video of Göttingen´s best PhD student, judged by a jury from the four Göttingen Graduate Schools, will be send to the Coimbra Doctoral Studies Working Group in Brussels, and will be evaluated online together with the winners from the other Coimbra universities by representatives of all participating universities. From the votes they will then select the three finalists from all 3MT candidates.
The competition here in Göttingen will be on 28 February 2022 in ZHG 011 (the largest lecture hall), starting at 5 p.m..
How do you prepare? How do we prepare?
First, we are happy to announce that again we can offer a coaching for all PhD students in February, who will present on 28 February. In two preparatory sessions you will be able to discuss your three-minute presentation and to work on your slide design regarding its content and presentation. You will find out how challenging it is to present your PhD topic in just 3 minutes to a general, non-scientific audience with only one static slide; keep in mind, competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
For those who are interested in participating in the 3MT Competition in Göttingen, here some rules for the 2022 Coimbra Group 3MT Competition.
