25th EMBL PhD symposium (20-22 Nov 2023; abstract deadline: 25 Aug)

The 25th EMBL PhD Symposium – “The Power of Many: Collective Behaviour Across Scales” will take place on 20-22 November 2023 at EMBL Heidelberg. You can either join in person or online!

Behaviour can be defined as the action of one entity in response to another. But, acting alone, the effect of singular units is limited. From molecular structures to cellular communication and complex ecosystems, the coordinated actions of functional units, to a common impulse, result in emergent behaviours. How does complexity arise and what approaches are currently being used to link individual actions to their ultimate consequence? Through a series of talks and discussions the organizers’ aim is to provide insight from multiple areas of research on this question and unravel the vast range of effects arising from collective behaviour. Join them in exploring the underlying mechanisms extending from sub-cellular environments to global ecology and evolutionary contexts.

The exciting list of speakers includes: Claudia Keller Valsecchi (Institute of Molecular Biology, Germany), Jenny Tung (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany), Verena Ruprecht (Centre for Genomic Regulation, Spain), Paola Scaffidi (The Francis Crick Institute, England), Gilles Laurent (Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, Germany), Fei Chen (Broad Institute of Harvard, USA), Ben Engel (Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland), Zev Gartner (University of California San Francisco, USA), Knut Drescher (Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland), and Bram van Dijk (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, Germany).

Students are encouraged to participate in the form of a short talk or a poster by submitting an abstract. Abstract deadline: 25 August 2023
