Bernd Rendel Prize for early career geoscientists (apply by 13 Feb 2023)
The DFG has been awarding the Bernd Rendel Prize annually since 2002 to early career geoscientists with a university degree but as yet no doctorate. The prizes are funded by the proceeds from the Bernd Rendel Foundation, which is administered by Stifterverband, and is intended to be used for scientific purposes, for example to enable recipients to attend international conferences and congresses.
The criteria for the award include the quality and originality of research work to date, which is not however required to be complete (thesis for a Diplom or master’s degree, dissertations or other work in progress). Particular attention is given to the chosen research approach and the candidates’ scientific potential.

In 2023, the Bernd Rendel Foundation in the Donors’ Association, together with the German Research Foundation (DFG), will once again award the Bernd Rendel Prize to presumably two young researchers from the geosciences who have not (yet) received their doctorate.
Criteria for the award are a high scientific potential as well as an exceptionally high quality and originality of the research work (e.g. Master’s thesis or ongoing dissertation). In addition, further career plans and the intended use of the prize money are taken into account when assessing the application. The prize money should be used for scientific purposes.
Both personal applications and proposals from academics in the same field may be submitted. Applications or proposals from candidates are possible until the day of the doctoral defence.
The following documents are required for applications or proposals:
- Covering letter with a maximum of 1 page of justification
- Curriculum vitae and brief description of current and possibly planned work, putting previous publications into context (DFG form 10.40)
- Master’s thesis (or diploma thesis) and publications
- Letter of endorsement
