Nomination of GAUSS student representatives
Dear program representatives, dear candidates, dear all GAUSS PhD students,
as you might have heard, the new GAUSS regulations recently came into law. This means that we need to nominate two new GAUSS student representatives.
The nomination will take place
Wednesday, September 12th, 4:30 pm,
Dept. of Physics, Friedrich-Hund-Platz 1,
We would like you to advertise this to other PhD students of your program so that possible candidates know that they can candidate. Please find attached a PDF with an official invitation and some more information that you can use.
Everyone interested can contact Daniela (dbuchwald@dpz.eu) or Jan (jan.tomasek@uni-goettingen.de) with questions, people who want to candidate can furthermore send a PowerPoint slide with some basic information about themselves and their background, which we will then use on the day of the nomination.
The two GAUSS student representatives will then be nominated (“ernannt”) by the student representatives of all GAUSS programs (which includes GGNB, if you are not aware). We therefore ask all of you to attend, if possible, so that the nomination can take place.
Thank you.
Kind regards, your GAUSS representatives
Daniela and Jan

What does it mean to be a GAUSS representative?
Jan Tomasek and I have been your student representatives for the last year and I will quit soon, while Jan could imagine to run again for a short tenure. Therefore minimum one new GAUSS student representative candidate is needed.
Being a student representative was a great experience for both of us. As a student representative you are directly involved in decisions that are being made and you get interesting insights on how things work at the university. In the last year, we helped to design the new GAUSS Regulations (GAUSS-Ordnung) and Doctoral degree regulations (RerNat-Ordnung), which currently came into force. Another topic was the ongoing merging of GAUSS and GGNB, with new regulations and we were involved in some financial decisions.
The workload was absolutely manageable. Usually there is one GAUSS board meeting every three months and we had a few additional meetings about financial decisions with a smaller committee, including both student representatives. These meetings are a bit more irregular, since sometimes a decision can be met through email but also no more than four per year. It doesn’t matter if you’re early or late stage PhD, but because all the university’s policies are in German, it is really helpful if you understand German (you don’t have to master the language though).
